In April 2017, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that New York State’s 2018 State Budget was passed. In that budget, money was set aside for programs such as free tuition for some students at SUNY and CUNY schools, the legalization of ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft, and $2.5 billion in funding to create 100,000 affordable housing units. These are only a few of the initiatives created in the budget, one of which being that $10 million has been allocated to a program to assist immigrants in obtaining legal representation.

The Liberty Defense Project is the first state-run program in the United States that aims to provide all immigrants with access to legal assistance. This program will be accessible to all immigrants, regardless of whether they are here legally or not. As immigration laws in the country continue to change, it is important for immigrants to obtain legal representation when they need it most. Many people don’t really know what their rights are and the assistance of experienced legal counsel can make a huge difference in your immigration status.

The Office for New Americans will lead the Liberty Defense Project, working not only with law firms and legal associations, but also with advocacy groups, colleges and universities, and various bar associations throughout the state.
