Unfortunately, immigrants have a tendency to be the target of scammers in an attempt to take their money. A lot of these fraudulent individuals will call or email you pretending to be someone from the United States Department of Homeland Security or United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

There is a new fraudulent call going around in which the caller will pretend to be calling from the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General that will tell people their identities have been stolen. They will try to obtain your personal information and may go ahead and use that information to harm you in some way. The scammers have altered the caller identification number to appear to be the DHS OIG phone number, which is 1-800-323-8603. Keep in mind that the DHS OIG never makes outbound calls and real employees from this department would not call you.

If you believe you have been the victim of this telephone scam or any other scam for that matter, you should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and report that your identity has been stolen. This is a very serious matter and can have a major impact on your future. It is important that you contact an experienced immigration attorney if you need assistance with any other matters related to your immigration process.
