If you have an immigration case pending in the United States, waiting for updates can feel agonizing and stressful, especially when your ability to work, travel, or stay in the U.S. may depend on the outcome. Fortunately, there are official ways to check your immigration case status online or by phone, depending on whether your case is with USCIS, the Department of State, or immigration court. For more information and to secure the help of a legal professional, continue reading and contact a knowledgeable immigration attorney today.
If you want to check the status of your immigration case, it depends on which agency is responsible for handling your application or petition. Consider the following.
USCIS:
To check the status of your USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) cases online, navigate to the status page on the official website. Enter the 13-character receipt number, which can be found on Form I-797, the Notice of Action, which should have confirmed the receipt of your application or petition. If you filed online, you can also log into your myUSCIS online account for access to your case and documents.
Department of State:
If you have a visa application with the Department of State/NVC (National Visa Center), go to the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC). Choose your visa type (either non-immigrant or immigrant) and click “Check My Visa Application Status.” For non-immigrant visas, enter your location, application ID or case number, passport number, and the first 5 letters of your last name. For immigrant visas, enter your immigrant visa case number, passport number, and the first 5 letters of your last name. Click submit, and you will gain access to the status of your application.
EOIR:
To check the status of your immigration court case, use EOIR’s (Executive Office for Immigration Review) Automated Case Information page online. Enter your A-Number (Alien Number) and nationality to access the details of your case.
Although it may be easier and faster to use the online tools, you can check your status by phone.
Having access to the status of your various immigration applications is important to prepare for the future. If you have questions or concerns, reach out to a skilled immigration attorney today.
