During the pandemic, former President Donald Trump made a lot of changes when it came to immigration laws. Trump suspended certain immigrant and work visas. Over the past few months, immigrants have been affected in a number of ways by these restrictions and delays. Now, President Joseph Biden plans to rescind some of Trump’s immigration proclamations.

What Are the Current Immigration Restrictions?

The restrictions instated by Trump were first enacted in April 2020, placing a ban on some prospective immigrants. These restrictions were then broadened in June to also suspend several temporary work visas, including the H-1B program. Before leaving office, Mr. Trump ordered a three-month extension of the restrictions. These restrictions have had a large impact, with estimates that more than 8,000 green card petitions were blocked between April and November 2020 as a result of Mr. Trump’s restrictions.

Who do The Restrictions Affect?

According to CBSNews.com, “spouses and children 21 or younger of U.S. citizens are not subject to the visa limits, which also exempt some health care workers fighting the pandemic, as well as wealthy immigrants who agree to invest more than $1 million in U.S. projects.”

When Will The Restrictions Be Rescinded?

It is unclear when exactly President Biden plans to rescind the restrictions, but it is something the Biden Administration is working on. Mr. Trump made a lot of changes to immigration laws in the past few months, but he has also passed a lot of laws over his past four years in office. According to CBS, President Biden will also” rescind a proclamation Mr. Trump issued in October 2019 to allow the government to reject visa applications from immigrants it determines will not be able to pay for health insurance or cover medical costs in the U.S.” While it is unclear what is to come, it is evident that President Biden is making changes to the current U.S. immigration laws.
